Memorial Day

I spent much of Memorial Day weekend away from Rogers Park to attend celebrations. I experienced BBQ, bonfires, a nature retreat, and time with my family. What is really on my mind though is, where I travelled to, over 100 miles away, I experienced a Memorial to the Veterans and those who did not make it back from wartime alive. There were veterans in uniforms, a 21 gun salute and Taps. Rogers Park did not have any memorial services, to my knowledge... and nothing as moving as what I experienced.

The more I travel away from Rogers Park and return, the more aware I become of how static and bland our neighborhood often is. Where are the street parades on Independence Day? Where are our live performances in the park of major recording artists and new touring acts? I haven't seen a 5k benefit run along the Lake for anything in Rogers Park. No large tree for the Holidays. No Day of the Dead Celebration.

Forget calling a street, "the Heart of Rogers Park", where is Rogers Park's Heart?

Meditation in Everyday Life presents peaceful abiding meditation, basic goodness, and ways that meditation practice can improve the quality of our daily life. By deepening our experience and understanding of ourselves through the practice of meditation, we more fully become who we already are.

This is the first course in our new core program, The Way of Shambhala, which provides a strong foundation in mindfulness-awareness meditation. This series is designed to be applied to the complexity of our daily lives, and to develop courage and sanity in these troubled times of uncertainty. The Way of Shambhala series offers a structured path of meditation and an introduction to all that Shambhala offers. It also offers a glimpse of the Shambhala vision of enlightened society by emphasizing the ways in which meditation can impact our daily lives, and from there how the sanity of meditation can expand to impact our whole society.

Worthwhile

Some people in Rogers Park like to critique the actions of others while sitting behind their keyboards all day long.

I have been criticized as being a keyboard dweller as well. But the fact is, that I do as much as I can to make a positive change in our community. I could drop the names of the many organizations and causes I have supported in town, but I would like to highlight something that I was a part of today, outside of Rogers Park.

I assisted in raising funds for Cancer research and awareness through the American Cancer Society Walk & Roll event in Grant Park. Participation in this event has become a family tradition in memory of my Uncle Mike who died of cancer.

I know many who devote most of their time to making Rogers Park a better place. What do you feel is worthwhile?

Not the Prettiest

When I mention that Rogers Park is not the prettiest neighborhood in Chicago, the following is an example why:

"The man found Friday duct taped and wrapped in a bed sheet in the back of the car belonging to a missing Rogers Park man was shot to death".

A dark theater

A dark theater is not a good sign. What happened to the good times, the old times? What happened to a time when people took pride in producing and supporting quality architecture and cinema?

Where are the advocates of historic preservation and cultural prominence?

The "developers" of this day are basing their floor plans on generica and forgetting the ornamentation that draws intelligent customers and anchors a community of people.

Dumb them down and fund an insurance policy on their early deaths is the unfortunate trend of the day.

I say, base your future, clients and buildings on longevity rather than the quick-buck alternative.

Have the balls to stick it out and do it right, or don't do anything at all.

This is not 'occasional violence'. Read more at 24/7 North of Howard Watchers: http://howardwatchers.blogspot.com/2010/05/male-shot-noh.html

The Quick on Rich Aronson's Proposal

Update from tonight's meeting with developer Rich Aronson

I asked Rich Aronson if he plans on working with the IEPA on the contaminated land issue. He answered, No.

Swanette Triem, infamous for the North Shore School teardown and IEPA stop work order, was looking a little pale when this was mentioned.

Michael Luckenbach asked Rich Aronson if he currently owns the Wisdom Bridge property. Rich Aronson answered evasively. The answer is No.

Another resident asked Rich Aronson if he had funding for this building. Rich Aronson answered, No.

Rich Aronson stated that he currently has no interested tenants.

Rich Aronson also stated that he may not be able to acquire a loan to fund the project.

Partner, Scott Sinar was not in attendance for this meeting.

In my opinion, the citizens of Rogers Park deserve better.

My final analysis is that this project will not go through. The three main reasons are:

1. The land contamination issue. The IEPA will make the demolition of the Wisdom Bridge Theatre cost prohibitive. If Rich Aronson hires a dubious demolition crew that demo's during nights and weekends, the land will be further contaminated. We learned this from Swanette Triem. It will remain an empty lot or dangerous hole in the ground for years to come.

2. The money issue. Rich Aronson always states that if the project becomes cost prohibitive, he will abandon it and move on. As stated earlier, He cannot fund the project independently, he has no tenants lined up, he even has doubts that the bank will give him a loan.

3. Community opposition. Rich Aronson also has a reputation for buckling under the pressure of community opposition. This was proven with the abandonment of his 7315 N. Sheridan Road project after our community strongly opposed it. If he has to fight at all, he considers his projects a waste of time and money.

RP1000 will continue to follow the progress or decay of this project closely.

Oppose Rich Aronson Tonight

Developers: Richard Aronson and Scott Sinar

Email blast from Alderman Joe Moore: Yes, two.

Developer history of campaign contributions to Alderman Joe Moore: Yes

Attend this meeting to oppose the demolition of the Historic Wisdom Bridge Theatre. Rich Aronson is known as a lightweight developer who often buckles under pressure.

As with all 49th Ward developer meetings, Alderman Joe Moore has previously been paid-off and will be in support of the project.

Developers stick together, so many former pay-offs will be seeded in the meeting to show support. Although the deck is loaded, outstanding community opposition can sink this project.

Please attend the meeting at:

Willye B. White Recreation Center 1610 W. Howard Street Chicago, IL. 60626, tonight at 7pm.
